Frequently asked
If your question isn't here, email hello@celdrive.com. We reply within a day.
Where is my data stored?
Your encrypted data lives in a managed cloud bucket (Backblaze B2 by default; Cloudflare R2, Oracle OCI, and iDrive E2 available for specific regions). You pick the region at signup. Data is encrypted at rest with AES-256. We do not access file contents.
What happens if I cancel my subscription?
Cancel from your Stripe customer portal any time. Access continues through the end of the paid period. After cancellation, your data stays available for 30 days (in case you want to restore), then is permanently deleted.
Is CelDrive a replacement for backup software?
No. CelDrive is a resource extender (storage, memory, and compute), not a backup tool. Your CelDrive folder is one of the things you'd want backed up. For whole-system disaster recovery, keep using Time Machine, Backblaze Personal, or similar alongside CelDrive.
Do I need to use the terminal?
No, but some power features (memory hibernation, GPU sessions, compute hosts) install and run via the CLI and are exposed as toggles in the dashboard. The visual app handles 80% of usage: sign-up, install, storage browsing, billing, and start/stop panels for memory, compute, and GPU. The CLI is there for the rest. Same outcomes either way.
Which operating systems are supported?
Storage runs on macOS (Apple Silicon + Intel), Linux (any modern distro with FUSE: Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, Arch, NixOS), and Windows 10 / 11 (PowerShell installer + WinFsp). Memory hibernation works on macOS and Linux today; Windows is on the roadmap. Compute and GPU sessions work cross-platform; they run remotely, so your local OS doesn't matter. iOS and Android apps are next. Join the mobile waitlist.
Do you actually have GPUs and compute servers?
We don't own them. We provision them on demand from RunPod (GPUs) and Hetzner Cloud (compute), in the region you pick. You pay only for the time you use, never a monthly minimum. Hetzner bills hourly with a 1-hour floor; RunPod bills by the second. Your data and credentials stay scoped to your account; we don't pool customer workloads on shared infrastructure.
How big can my CelDrive folder get?
Capped by your tier: 10 GB on Starter, 100 GB on Plus, 1 TB on Pro, 5 TB on Team, 50 TB+ on Enterprise. Hard caps. Sync refuses writes when you hit 100% rather than billing overage, so you never get a surprise bill. Upgrade any time and your data and devices come with you.
How is this different from Dropbox or iCloud?
Dropbox and iCloud are file-sync products. They keep a copy of your files in their cloud and another copy on every device, then constantly sync between them. CelDrive is a resource extender. Your CelDrive folder is one place that lives in your private cloud bucket, mounted natively as a real folder on every computer you own. No double-storage, no sync conflicts, no per-file copy. And on top of disk, it expands memory and compute too, which Dropbox and iCloud don't touch.
Is my data encrypted end-to-end?
Today: data is encrypted at rest by the underlying cloud provider (AES-256) and in transit (TLS 1.3). Your bucket is private and scoped to you; nobody else can read it. Client-side zero-knowledge encryption (where even we can't read your data) is on the Enterprise roadmap. Ask us if you need it sooner for your security review.
What's your SOC 2 / compliance status?
We're pre-SOC 2. Our certification path is scheduled and we'll share progress with Enterprise customers under NDA. In the meantime we can provide a written security posture statement, sign your DPA + MSA, and run through your vendor security review. We're honest about where we are. We won't claim certifications we don't have.
Can we put this behind our VPN?
Enterprise roadmap: private peering (VPC-to-VPC) or WireGuard tunnel so CelDrive only answers from inside your network. If this is a blocker for procurement, let us know. We're co-developing this feature with our first enterprise customers and can scope an accelerated build.
Can you alert us on risky git pushes from untrusted machines?
This is on the Enterprise roadmap: "git-push monitoring" (the pattern Epsilon and similar large orgs use internally). Our agent watches for pushes from machines not in your allowlist and fires webhooks / Slack alerts. Early access available to Enterprise customers during the pilot program.
Is there a free trial?
The Starter tier is free forever with 10 GB of managed storage. No credit card, no time limit. It's the same product as the paid tiers; the cap is on storage and on the memory + compute features. On top of that, every paid tier comes with a 7-day full refund from the day we provision your install kit, no questions asked. Enterprise plans start with a paid proof-of-concept, typically 30 days, with success criteria agreed upfront.
